What should I bring to the in-person auditions?
Bring water, comfortable footwear (runners, socks, or bare feet), active wear, and your headshot. You do not need to prepare anything for the in-person audition and you do not need to bring a resume or any additional material. If you have additional questions about the in-person audition process, please contact us by email, Instagram, or Facebook.
What are some tips for the virtual audition?
You have a lot of creative freedom with this audition so have fun with it! Choreograph or learn a contemporary, jazz, lyrical, or tap combo that best shows off your skill, technique, and personality. Ensure that your video is well lit, that there is good audio, and that you remain in frame. If you have any more questions about the virtual audition process, please contact us by email or through Instagram or Facebook.
What happens during the in-person audition?
The audition will run just like a dance class. We will lead you in a warm-up and stretch, go across the floor, and then we will teach you a combo. Across the floor will be more technique and jazz based and the combo will be contemporary or lyrical. There is nothing you will need to prepare, just arrive ready to dance!
Do I need to have a competitive dance background to be on the team?
Nope! While most of our dancers have competitive or pre-professional dance backgrounds, this is not a requirement.
What type of dance do you do?
We are a contemporary, jazz, and tap company. While these are the 3 genres we focus on, we have dancers from all backgrounds so we have opportunities to practice ballet, jazz funk, musical theatre, lyrical, and more.
What type of performances does the team do?
We dance at UBC events, sport events, fundraisers, club events, Greek-life events, and showcases on campus and around Vancouver. We also have an annual year-end show in April.
What else do you do?
While dance is obviously our main focus, we also enjoy fundraising, team-bonding, engaging with fellow dancers at UBC and the general student body, and supporting our Vancouver dance community. The UBC Dance Team provides an opportunity for strong dancers to continue high-calibre dance training, find success academically, and become an integral part of the University of British Columbia. Joining a club is a great way to get involved during university, and if you like to dance, this might be the club for you!
